What is Microblading?

Origins & Techniques

Microblading originated in Asia over 20 years ago and has gone by many names: eyebrow embroidery, feather touch, micro-stroking and even “the Japanese Method." In 2015, microblading gained popularity in the United States and continues to grow. It’s amazing to see how eyebrow tattooing techniques have evolved from an intimidating “drag-queen” look to being very natural, full, and life-like.

There are many techniques and approaches to microblading. 2D eyebrows are created with hair-strokes that all go in one direction. We create 3D eyebrows where the hair-strokes are laid out in a specific pattern across the eyebrow ridges creating a 3D effect. There are even “6D Eyebrows” where the actual depth of the microblade varies on each individual hair-stroke. Feather-stroking is a popular celebrity technique that promotes the trendy “wild brow” look.

Microblading typically takes two appointments to complete.

During your first appointment, a frame will be drawn around your eyebrows that compliments your facial structure and personal style. Once you approve of the look of the frame, your eyebrow area will be numbed with a topical anesthetic for over 20 minutes. Hair-like strokes will then be microbladed onto your eyebrows. There will be some mild scabbing and aftercare required, but your microblading should be completely healed in 30 days.

The second appointment is considered a touch-up and should take place approximately 6-8 weeks after the first session. This allows enough time for the ink in the epidermis to naturally slough off and for the color to settle into your skin. During the touch-up appointment, we'll be able to see how your skin has received the ink and make any necessary corrections. Once in a while, a client’s skin undertones may have unexpected effects on the ink’s color and additional color may be needed to adjust the look. This is completely normal and an essential part of the process, as everyone’s skin is different and receives ink differently.

Please note that those with oily skin may need an additional touch-up after the second appointment.

The Procedure

The microblading procedure itself involves the process of delicately implanting pigment into the skin via tiny, sterile needles lined up horizontally called a “microblade” to simulate the appearance of natural hair. Microblading is meant to be a subtle, natural enhancement and creates the illusion of fuller eyebrows.  It’s perfect for people who have thin, over-tweezed eyebrows, or for those who want to define, darken, and reshape their eyebrows. 

The Process

Unlike traditional tattooing, microblading artists apply individual hair-strokes at a very shallow depth. This produces very fine hair-like lines that resemble real hair. Each individual hair-stroke can be blended in with the client’s existing eyebrow hair. With a strong artist at the helm, the results can be amazing. If you have very little or sparse eyebrow hair, results will appear more 2D and it’s possible that you will need more than two sessions to achieve your desired results.
